A Fine Georgian Mahogany Channel Islands Serpentine Chest

A Fine Geo III Mahogany Serpentine Chest of 4 graduated drawers, made in the Channel Islands circa 1800. A Superb example of Jersey Cabinet making - crossbanded and with Satinwood canted corners and frieze, inlaid shells & sunburst, with elegantly shaped bracket feet, original brasses, and excellent small size - width at front 37", depth 20 1/2", height 34".

This Chest exemplifies the astute choice of fine timbers and restrained marquetry that is typical of the best Channel Isle workshops of the late Georgian period.  History tells us that trading ships returning from the West Indies and bound for London would often call on the Channel Islands en route, and thus the cabinet makers had first pick of the choice timbers on board.  This would explain the finely figured veneers and unusual timbers often displayed in Channel Island furniture.
