HISTORICAL NOTE re the Borghese Gladiator
This miniature bronze figure is a Late 19th Century reduction of the iconic 2 metre Hellenistic marble in the Louvre, dating from 100 BC - itself now believed to be a copy of an original bronze of 400 BC by the great Greek sculptor Lysippos of Sicyon.  Excavated circa 1610 on the site of Nero's seaside palace at Anzio, the marble remained in the Borghese collection in Rome until compulsorily purchased by Napoleon and removed to Paris in 1807.  Life size copies stand in many of the great houses of England. Our attractively patinated bronze was produced by the Louvre as a Grand Tour souvenir, suitable for a collector's cabinet, desk or mantelpiece
