Large Grand Tour Bronze of the Dancing Faun

A Fine & Large Grand Tour Bronze of the Dancing Faun, an early example with excellent detail and patina, 12 1/4" high (31 cm), the base 4" wide x 3 3/4" deep

HISTORICAL NOTE:
The original bronze statue of the Dancing Faun was located in the sumptuous grounds of the 'House of the Faun', one of the largest private residences of Pompeii, built in the 2nd Century and so named after the statue of this satyr-like figure.  Preserved by layers of volcanic ash after the eruption of Vesuvius, it was uncovered in the excavations of the 1830s, when copies began to be made for the wealthy art collectors who wanted to take home souvenirs of their Grand Tour
