Fine & Rare Regency Mahogany Folio Stand
A Fine & Rare Regency Mahogany Library Folio Stand of "gridiron" design, superbly articulated with turned stretchers and reeded sabre legs with conforming casters, rabbetted for adjustment. A Stand of this design stamped by Taprell and Holland has been noted on the London Art Market in recent years. Taprell & Holland (1803-35) supplied, inter alia, furnishings for the Union Club (1823) and the Athenaeum (1824-38) as well as numerous noble families. The purpose of such a useful item was to enable a gentleman to peruse heavy folios of prints, adjusting the stand accordingly. The design has most probably never been bettered and is the epitome of intelligent Georgian construction.
