Very Fine Writing Table by Holland & Sons

A Very Fine Mid 19th Century Writing Table attributed to the important firm of Holland & Sons, in the Louis XVI style favoured by Queen Victoria, the leathered top with multiple bandings in tulipwood and panelled in treillage inlaid harewood, the corners with inlaid florets, with finely cast gilt bronze mounts to the legs and drawer fronts.

HISTORICAL NOTE:
This prestigious firm of cabinet makers, originally founded in 1803 by William Holland & Stephen Taprell, became one of the most successful furniture makers of the 19th Century.  They were granted the Royal Warrant early in Queen Victoria's reign and worked on many commisssions for Osborne House, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral and Marlborough House.  Commissions for the British Government included furniture for the Palace of Westminster, the British Museum and Royal Academy.  They took part in all the important International Exhibitions including the Great Exhibition of 1851, and in 1986 a Holland & Sons Cabinet realised £81,000 at Christie's, at that time the highest price ever paid for an item of Victorian furniture.  This superbly crafted table is typical of the firm's Louis XVI style of furniture so favoured by Queen Victoria.
